Venturing, Explorer and Sea Scout Programs in Northwest Ohio

At some point in their lives, young men may find that the Boy Scout program doesn't have all the challenges they seek as teenagers. Boy Scouts of America also has other programs that can challenge these young men AND also can challenge young women too. Venturing, Explorer and Sea Scout programs are for youth 14 to 21 years old and provide co-ed programs with different opportunities for these youth. As a means of helping youth pursue other challenges in Scouting while not necessarily as Boy Scouts we suggest they consider these "non-traditional" programs.

You can go to any of the 3 program links below and find a unit, or units, nearby and their contact information so you can visit them and get specific information from them. Each non-traditional program is different and each unit is different with different requirements and guidelines governing them so the best information is from the units themselves.

Venture Crews
Venturing officially started back in 1998, but dates back many years early, as a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 13 and have completed the eighth grade, or age 14 through 20 years of age. Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Venturing crews can specialize in a variety of avocation or hobby interests.

Explorer Posts
Exploring is a worksite-based program of Learning for Life, a subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America, for young men and women who are 14 through 20 years old (15 through 21 in some areas). Exploring units, called "posts", usually have a focus on a single career field, such as police, fire/rescue, emergency medical services, healthcare, law, aviation, engineering, or the like, and may be sponsored by a government or business entity. Prior to the late 1990s, the Exploring program was the main BSA program for older youth and included posts with an emphasis on outdoor activities, which are now part of the Venturing program.

Sea Scouts
Sea Scouting started back in 1912 as a specialized segment of the Venturing program, which was organized to address members' boating skills and promote knowledge of our maritime heritage. Just recently (Spring 2016) Sea Scouts became a separate and unique program no longer part of the Venturing program. During World War II, Sea Scouts were readily accepted in the US Navy because of their knowledge and experience with the sea.

EVS Events

You can go to the Calendar of EVS Events and see what programs or training is being offered and who you need to contact if you're interested in participating. Most of our activities can be attended by others, an Explorer may go to Sea Scout activities for example, and you can share each others adventures. These are typically BSA approved events that we're just posting for your convenience.
